Tips to Help Your High School Senior Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

As a high school senior portrait photographer in Detroit, with over 15 years experience in capturing senior pictures, I’ve learned some valuable tips to make your senior portrait session an enjoyable experience.

Senior pictures are a big milestone. We are capturing your senior before they transition into adulthood and celebrating the great accomplishment of graduating high school. We know not everyone is comfortable taking pictures, so here are some tips to help you as you prepare for a fun, stress-free session for you and your senior.

1) Choose the Right Photographer for your senior pictures

Find a photographer that has a style that your teen loves. Research Detroit photographers who specialize in senior pictures and have the ability to bring out your senior’s personality and make the session natural.

2) Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is the best way to make your experience stress-free. You should plan your outfits ahead of time, picking outfits that your senior feels comfortable and confident in. There are multiple outfits in each session, so there is an opportunity to work together so that everyone is happy with outfit selections.

3) Pick a Detroit / Metro Detroit location that feels comfortable

As your favorite Detroit senior photographer, I will present various places to have your session around downtown/midtown Detroit, like the DIA, Eastern Market, or travel a little north of the city to Royal Oak, Ferndale, or Birmingham, Mi. In studio sessions are also an option if you want to stay indoors.

4) Bring a friend or sibling for extra support

Bring your bestie because having a familiar face around can help your teen feel more relaxed during their session. We all need that someone that can bring out the best in us. It makes for great memories too.

5) Keeping your senior session FUN

Your session should not be stressful. I make sure your teen knows that they are free to be themselves…that’s what I want to capture. I want their personalities to shine through. we keep it light, listen to music, and try to incorporate things your senior loves to help them feel at ease.
